1 / 6 · The Joint Doesn't Turn The Bolt. It Prys At It.

A universal joint sends your force through two yokes and a cross pin. Straight, it passes cleanly. At an angle, it can't — the driven side speeds up and slows down twice per revolution, and that pulsing has to land somewhere.

 

It lands on the bolt. Not evenly across all six flats. On two corners.

 

The steeper the angle, the worse it gets. At thirty degrees you've stopped turning the bolt and started prying at it. The man who rounds one of these off doesn't have bad hands — he has a tool that was never going to do the job, and he'll go buy a better ratchet and round the next one the same way.

2 / 6 · A Straight Extension Only Moves The Problem, It Doesn't Solve It

Here's the bolt that started it. Nothing wrong with it — six clean flats, nothing seized, nothing corroded. The problem was never the bolt. It was everything sitting between your hand and it.

 

Adding length in a straight line does exactly one thing: it moves your hand further away. It does nothing about the bracket, the panel, or the grille support blocking the swing.

3 / 6 · A Chain-Driven Offset Feels Strong — Until You Actually Load It

This is the one that fools the most men, because it looks like the answer. A flat bar, a chain inside, a socket on each end. On the shelf, it feels solid. 

 

Under real torque it doesn't. A roller chain has slack built into every link, and that slack has to go somewhere before the bolt ever feels your force. One man on a forum described it about as well as it can be described:

“It felt like trying to turn a bolt with a wet noodle. Fine for snug bolts, useless on anything actually stuck.”

The force doesn't vanish. It gets stored in the slack, then comes back as a jolt, at an angle, straight into the weakest corner of the fastener. That's why chain-driven extensions can round a bolt at the exact moment you finally leaned into it.

A seized fastener is a hard job. A rounded fastener is a different job entirely. 

 

Extractor. If the extractor snaps — and hardened extractors do snap — you're drilling. If the drill wanders, you're tapping. If the threads are in aluminum, you're helicoiling. Four minutes of the wrong tool, and a Saturday becomes a machine shop bill.
